Every piece in the shop uses materials chosen for a specific functional reason. The oak boards are from Gifu Prefecture. The linen napkins are woven in Nara. We can tell you where each thing comes from because we asked.
We do not refresh the catalogue every quarter to manufacture urgency. Items stay until they sell out or until we find something genuinely better. Most of our core range has been here since 2021.
Standard Western homeware often does not fit Japanese counter depths or storage. We test every item in a standard 1K apartment kitchen before it goes on the site.
If a bowl chips at the rim after two years of daily use, we say so. If a cutting board needs monthly oiling, we say so. The product pages are written by people who have used the things.
An oak cutting board is not a complicated thing to look after, but it does need some attention, and the advice online is inconsistent enough that it is worth writing down what we actually do. Read more →Today Oak Vault Line operates from a small warehouse and packing room in the Fushimi district of Kyoto. There are two full-time staff and one part-time packer who comes in on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The catalogue has grown to around eighty items, but the selection process has not changed: every item gets used in a kitchen for at least four weeks before it is listed. Some things have been tested and rejected three or four times before a version good enough to sell was found. That is not a story we tell to sound rigorous. It is just what happened.
The list of things I would have stocked instead became the shop.
Haruki Nishimura spent seven years as a homeware buyer for a department store group in Osaka, where he developed a habit of testing products at home before recommending them to the floor team. He left in autumn 2018 and started Oak Vault Line the following spring, initially as a market stall at Toji Temple in Kyoto. He sources most of the catalogue himself, travelling to kilns in Aichi and Shiga and to the linen mill in Nara two or three times a year. Outside the shop, he cooks most evenings and keeps a small notebook of things that broke, chipped, or disappointed him in the kitchen. Which is, more or less, the product development process.
